After Grandpa retired from the ministry, Grandma Vedah still wanted “to shed a few rays of sunshine,” as she put it. Writing children’s literature was the way she chose to do it.

In the early 1980s, my Grandpa and Grandma, the Rev. Donald Lorenzo Wilson and Vedah Verlah Wilson, retired to Holland, Michigan, after years of caring for their churches, their children and grandchildren, and the many other lives they touched.

For 2 years, Vedah studied by mail with the Institute for Children’s Literature, where she wrote a series of stories that reflected her deep faith, her exuberant joy, and the great love she had for children—particularly her children and grandchildren, who appeared frequently in her writings.

Years later, when Grandma Wilson passed and joined Grandpa in Heaven, I came into possession of a box containing those stories and other ideas she had written down. I am finally posting those writings here.

“I still want to try to shed a few rays of sunshine and thought I might try to put some of my thoughts in writing.

“Let’s Get Acquainted”

When Grandma first joined the Children’s Writing Institute, she was asked to write a short autobiographical piece introducing herself. This is an amazing story, covering her entire life all the way up to 1983, and is a true testament to her faith and love.
